During the July school holiday, 70 newly recruited Grade 10 girls spent 5 days building on their newfound web development skills at Code for Cape Town’s Code Week 2017. This time they learnt Javascript, after previously being introduced to HTML and CSS at the Intro to Coding workshop in the April holiday.

Girls were placed at various sites across Cape Town: Amazon Web Services and American Corner in the city centre, Bandwidth Barn in Khayelitsha and Makapula High School in Stellenbosch.

“I enjoyed my experience at Amazon and I’m excited to come back for the Saturday classes.” – Zaakirah, Gr10

Each day there was a lunchtime Code Conversation where women in the tech industry shared their experiences with the girls.

“The facilitators made this event very fun, they were interactive and helped me when I needed help.” – Laeeqa, Gr10

A large group of the girls attended class close to home, at Bandwidth Barn in Khayelitsha

“We had a really great time at Code Week, it was fun because we used coding to create animations and design pictures. Wow! What a great adventure.” – Avela, Gr10

Code Week was a great success – the girls were able to use their school holiday to advance their skills while having fun, and the fun continued the following week at Code Camp!
