At Code for Cape Town our ultimate vision is to see young women able to leverage technology for social innovation. When girls enter our program in Grade 10, they immediately start using their coding skills for social good.

During Code Camp this year, our Grade 10 learners worked on projects addressing a variety of issues such as young women not having information about menstruation, learners not being able to find information about bursaries and people struggling to locate wifi hotspots.

These issues were presented to the learners by four different organisations who outlined the work they currently do, and how a web application could enhance their work. For example, SAEP offer career guidance to students in their program and wanted to see a web application to help students not in their program to find similar information.

The project groups were assisted by the Deloitte Digital team who gave a hands-on workshop around identifying user needs and designing a minimal viable product.

With the help of tutors, the project teams worked towards creating a working prototype. Prior to Code Camp, the learners attended Code Week, an intensive introductory course that covered the basics of using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This equipped them with the coding skills needed to work on the project.

The Deloitte Digital team introduced the concept of user testing and facilitated each group testing their project and identifying issues to address in a final sprint.

Code Camp culminated with each project presenting their work to their clients, teachers, peers, and families. Functional prototypes of the four projects were uploaded on the teams’ GitHub repositories. The learners will continue to work on these initial projects over the following six months during Saturday classes and school holidays.
