During Africa Code Week 2017, Code4CT ran six Intro to Coding workshops at the American Corner in the Cape Town Central Library.

Thanks to a financial grant from Google, 55 high school girls from around Cape Town were able to attend the workshop free of charge.

Girls from various school and grades were introduced to the wonder of web development – a skill we hope they will pursue further. Now that they know what coding is, what languages are used to code the web, and how wide the scope of possibilities is, we hope that they will approach problems differently and consider a future in technology innovation. Girls were introduced to the stories of existing female role models in the industry and we hope to share their stories too someday!

The workshops were run by our very own success stories, Code4CT Ambassadors, who are made up of current participants (in high school!) as well as alumnae who have chosen to give back while they pursue their tertiary studies.

This is what girl power looks like – young women with initiative and a heart to share what they have learnt with others:

Alumna and ambassador, Malyka, teaching learners how to edit their web page.

Ambassador, Zainab helping a learner with her coding activity
