Ncebakazi Gxako (pictured below, middle) attended Startup Weekend CPT and walked away as part of the winning team with a solution to tackle shack fires.

Startup Weekend CPT saw a total of nine teams working to develop viable business ideas over the space of one intense weekend.

Ncebakazi, who attended Code4CT in July 2014 and 2015, said:

“I liked the fact that the event gathers people of different ages and communities to find solutions to problems they see/have identified in their community. The event was great because we were grouped according to the projects that we want to see being implemented in the country. Everyone who wanted to pitch an idea was given a platform to do so. I felt as if I knew the people for a long time because of the way we were able to communicate and work together.”

The event complements the Code4CT design thinking curriculum, in which girls learn how to tackle social issues. An event such as Startup Weekend means that Code4CT girls are able to continue what they learn in the program.

“I learned that every skill that I have is very vital because I was able to design a website for our project through the skills that I have acquired during the Code4CT camps. Being able to work with other people in spite of their age/race. I learned that there are a lot of people in Khayelitsha that are trying to improve the standard of living of the people in Khayelitsha. The people are always ready to support startup businesses” said Ncebakazi about what she learned at the weekend.

This was the first Startup Weekend hosted at The Barn Khayelitsha, an exciting tech innovation space – we hope to see more! Find out more about the event and the Barn here.

“Startup Weekend Cape Town was proof that the youth of this country are connected, informed & full of solutions. We just need to enable them. I hope to see many more initiatives like this one spring up all over Africa” said Marwaan Sasman of Pigeon Pie.

Thank you to the organisers of Startup Weekend for generously offering full scholarships to select Code4CT girls.

“Thank you very much for this opportunity, I enjoyed myself and have learnt so much during this weekend.” -Ncebakazi
